Types of Assessments

Initial Assessments

Initial assessments are typically conducted at the start of our work with a client. These assessments help us gain a comprehensive understanding of the client's history, current concerns, and goals for therapy.

Diagnostic Assessments

Diagnostic assessments are used to identify specific psychological conditions. These might include assessments for:

  • ADHD: Evaluations to diagnose Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.

  • Mood Disorders: Assessments for conditions such as depression and bipolar disorder.

  • Anxiety Disorders: Including generalised anxiety disorder, panic disorder, and social anxiety.

Screening Assessments

Screening assessments help identify potential issues early on. These screenings can flag areas of concern that may require further investigation or immediate intervention.

Specialised Assessments

We offer specialised assessments for particular needs, such as:

  • WPATH Assessments: For clients seeking gender affirmation services, we provide assessments in line with the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) standards.

  • Neuropsychological Assessments: Evaluating cognitive functions to diagnose issues like memory problems or learning disabilities.

  • Psychoeducational Assessments: Identifying learning disabilities, giftedness, and other educational needs.

Ongoing Assessments

These assessments are conducted during the course of treatment to monitor progress, adjust treatment plans, and ensure that therapeutic goals are being met.

Personality Assessments

Personality assessments help in understanding the client's character traits, behaviours, and patterns. These can be useful in diagnosing personality disorders or simply gaining deeper insights into a client's personality to tailor the therapy accordingly.

Intelligence Assessments

Intelligence assessments evaluate cognitive abilities and intellectual potential. These are often used for educational planning, diagnosing intellectual disabilities, or understanding a client's cognitive strengths and weaknesses.

Assessment Process

Preparation

Clients are provided with clear instructions on how to prepare for their assessments. This may include completing preliminary questionnaires or gathering relevant personal and medical history information.

What to Expect

The assessment process varies depending on the type of assessment. It can involve:

  • Questionnaires: Standardised tools to gather information about symptoms and behaviours. These are generally online, through platforms such as NovoPsych and Pearson Global and PariConnect.

  • Interviews: In-depth discussions with a psychologist to explore issues in detail.

  • Observation: Behavioural assessments conducted during therapy sessions or in specific settings.

Confidentiality

We ensure that all assessment results are kept confidential and shared only with the client's consent. This helps build trust and encourages open communication.

Reasons for Testing

Psychological testing is conducted for various reasons:

  • Diagnosis: To accurately diagnose mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, ADHD, PTSD, and more. This helps in understanding the root cause of the client's symptoms and behaviours.

  • Treatment Planning: To develop a personalised treatment plan that addresses the unique needs of the client. By identifying specific issues, psychologists can tailor interventions that are most likely to be effective.

  • Progress Monitoring: To track changes in symptoms and overall mental health over time. This helps in evaluating the effectiveness of treatment and making necessary adjustments.

  • Educational and Occupational Guidance: To provide insights into a person's cognitive abilities, learning styles, and vocational interests, which can be useful for educational planning and career counselling.

  • Forensic and Legal Purposes: To provide assessments that may be required in legal contexts, such as custody disputes, competency evaluations, and court-ordered assessments.

Use of Assessment Results

Verbal Feedback

In some cases, assessment results can be delivered verbally during a consultation. This immediate feedback can help clients understand their situation better and discuss next steps.

Treatment Planning

Assessment results are crucial in forming personalised treatment plans. They help in setting therapeutic goals and choosing the most effective interventions.

Formal Reports

For certain assessments, we prepare formal written reports. These detailed documents can be used for medical referrals, educational purposes, or personal records, depending on the needs of the client. Please inform us of your specific needs and how you intend to use written reports.
